Congratulations, Students

The Rossmoor Woman's Club honored Los Alamitos High School seniors April Chernila and  Leah Huffington as students of the month for January and February, respectively.

April, left photo, is the founder and president of the LAHS Girls Coding Club and a Vice President for the California Scholarship Federation.  She is a four-year member of the LAHS Dance Program and has spent the last two years on Advanced Dance.  Outside of school, April is a Team Leader for the International Internship Program: she and her team work with a community in Nigeria to spread awareness about human trafficking by creating educational programs.  April is also a proofreader for Project Gutenberg where she helps edit online public domain texts, giving people access to books worldwide.  April has maintained a cumulative GPA of 4.3 and achieved a 4.8 GPA during her most recent semester.  In college, she hopes to study data science in conjunction with public policy.

Leah Huffington, right photo, is a bookworm whose primary aspiration in life is to help others.  As a four-year member and the Co-President of the Activities Branch of Spanish Honors Society, she runs the club's tutoring program, where she strives to advance interpersonal communications skills and broaden other members' cultural horizons.  Since 2017, she has been the Assistant Coordinator for the Tennis Charity at the Seal Beach Tennis Center, monitoring the distribution of volunteers, equipment and clothing to inner city high school students unable to afford such necessities/luxuries.  During the summertime, she enjoys volunteering as a camp counselor at the Long Beach Marine Institution.  She plans to major in political science or international affairs to become a lawyer, diplomat, or a politician in order to advocate for human decency.

Each student received a certificate and $600 scholarship award from the Rossmoor Woman's Club.
